Experience Authentic Rural Persian Culture

Our hub, Khoonegeli Homestay, located at the foothills of the Alborz Range, is the culmination of years spent living in the diaspora, driven by nostalgia and the desire to reconnect with our roots. Here, you can immerse yourself in genuine Persian hospitality, enjoy traditional home-cooked meals, and explore the picturesque surroundings that define rural Persian life.

Welcome to Khoonegeli: Your Home Away from Home

At Khoonegeli, we invite you to experience the warmth and comfort of our home, which will also become your home during your visit. Established in 2003, our residence is a testament to both traditional craftsmanship and our deep-rooted connection to this land.

A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Khoonegeli is a beautiful example of traditional building methods from the region, constructed using the time-honored technique of  wattle and daub. This method utilizes natural materials like wood, mud, and hay, blending seamlessly with the environment. Remarkably, about half of the wood used in the construction was reclaimed from old structures that had been replaced by modern brick and cement buildings in Tonekabon. Our roof features handmade clay tiles, some of which are over 150 years old, adding to the historical charm of our home.

The chief builder of Khoonegeli is Usta (Master) Mohammad Galesh Hosseini , a revered local carpenter and bricklayer with decades of experience. Although he is illiterate, his technical expertise and skill are unparalleled. Usta Mohammad, who has also crafted subsequent buildings on our farm, embodies the spirit of his generation and has a rich history. In his youth, he cared for a holy shrine called Chaak, where his ancestors are buried, and worked as a shepherd in the mountains before apprenticing with the late Usta Ahmad, whom I had the honor of meeting.

The Heart of Khoonegeli: The Orangery

Khoonegeli is nestled within an orangery  that was once a tea farm owned by my paternal grandfather, Rajabali Malaki. Since the 1920s, during the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi, my father and uncles have worked this land. We revived the abandoned plantation by planting various citrus trees and other fruits, although we eventually concluded that tea cultivation was no longer viable.

Our orangery boasts a diverse array of fruit trees, including Thompson, Hamlin, Page, Clementine, Persian Lime, sanguine Thompson, Washingtonian, Yunesi, Seville, and Valencian varieties. Additionally, you'll find kakis (persimmons), lychees, figs, wild apples, plums, pears, quince, eucalyptus, and Hyrcanian forest trees such as beech and Caspian oak. The property spans approximately 6,500 square meters, situated in a semi-rural area between the quaint villages of Chelasar and Jal-e-Chelasar, just a few hundred meters from the Western Central Alborz Mountains and a mere 15 kilometers from the Caspian Sea.

Your Comfortable Stay at Khoonegeli

Khoonegeli features two floors designed for comfort and convenience. The ground floor includes an open kitchen, a cozy 20 m² bedroom, a shower room, and a squat toilet. A wooden staircase leads to the upstairs area, which includes a larger bedroom with access to a south-facing veranda of approximately 24 m². We accommodate up to 10 guests at a time, with only 2 groups hosted simultaneously to ensure privacy and a personalized experience. There are no dormitory-style accommodations; you will always have your own private room. Additionally, we provide internet access and parking for your convenience.

In our garden, you’ll find:

- A cabin with two toilets (one non-squat) and a shower room

- A charming  treehouse with a swing

- A  bamboo hut equipped with sofas and a table, perfect for afternoon teas and gatherings

- A separate bedroom called Ariyaan’s Room, located 15 meters from the washrooms, ideal for solo travellers or couples seeking more privacy (note: it has no electricity, but an oil lamp is provided).

Kolbeye Shams, another wattle and daub building with old wooden shingles, is a few meters from the main house. Currently, it serves as the host’s residence and features a traditional bread oven (tanoor), which has been used for larger group events in the past.

A Space for Wellness and Reflection

Our  yoga and meditation hall is designed to accommodate up to 15 people. We welcome groups interested in using this serene space and can arrange yoga and meditation workshops with sufficient notice.
