Mount Damavand, the majestic peak of Iran, stands proudly as the highest volcano in Asia and the highest peak in the Middle East, reaching an impressive altitude of 5,610 meters. Located in the Alborz mountain range, straddling the border between Tehran and Mazandaran provinces, Damavand’s symmetrical cone and snow-capped summit are visible from Tehran on clear days, offering a tantalizing glimpse of adventure to those who seek to conquer its heights.
The journey to Mount Damavand offers a wealth of experiences, from lush meadows to barren volcanic landscapes. There are 16 different routes to the summit, each offering a unique perspective of this magnificent mountain. The southern route is the most popular and busiest, known for its well-marked path and relatively accessible terrain. Trekkers often begin their ascent from the picturesque Goosfandsara, a pastoral area where flocks of sheep graze peacefully, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
The classical five-day trek to Mount Damavand includes a crucial acclimatization day to help climbers adjust to the high altitude and improve their chances of reaching the summit. A key highlight of this trek is the stay at Bargah Sevom, the third shelter situated at 4,220 meters, providing a comfortable resting point before the final push to the summit. Other notable routes include the Northeastern approach and the northern route, both offering breathtaking views and diverse terrain for those seeking a less crowded path.
As trekkers ascend, they pass through Laar National Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. The park serves as a gateway to the mountain, with its verdant valleys and crystal-clear streams. Throughout the trek, muleteers play an essential role, transporting gear and supplies, allowing climbers to focus on the ascent. The support from experienced teams, such as Caspian Trek, ensures that all logistics are handled, providing a seamless and enjoyable trekking experience.
One of the most awe-inspiring features of Mount Damavand is the Abshar Yakhi waterfall, located at an altitude of 5,100 meters. This icy cascade is a testament to the mountain’s glacial origins and offers a refreshing sight amidst the barren high-altitude environment. The waterfall is particularly striking during the winter months, when the entire mountain is cloaked in snow, creating a surreal and pristine landscape.
The best season to climb Mount Damavand is from June to late September, when the weather is most favorable and the routes are generally free of snow. However, regardless of the season, obtaining entry permits is a crucial step for all climbers, ensuring the preservation and protection of this natural wonder.
At Caspian Trek, we are proud to have organized expeditions to Mount Damavand since 2008. We can tailor-make your trek to include an excursion deep into Laar National Park and combine it with a cultural visit to the Persian capital, Tehran.
