Ascending Mount Damavand (5,671m): The Highest Peak in Iran via the North-Eastern Route
Mount Damavand, towering at 5,671 meters, is not only the highest peak in Iran but also the tallest volcano in Asia. Its majestic presence has inspired countless adventurers, and the North-Eastern route is one of the less-travelled paths, offering a unique and challenging experience for those who seek the thrill of climbing this iconic mountain.
Day 1: Transfer from Tehran (1,000m ASL) to Nandal Village (2,300m ASL)
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from the bustling capital of Tehran to the tranquil Nandal Village, situated at 2,300 meters above sea level. It’s recommended to depart after breakfast to allow ample time to acclimatize. The drive, approximately three hours without stops, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Upon arrival in Nandal, you might want to stretch your legs with a short hike in the picturesque surroundings. The night will be spent in a local home, which, while basic, offers an authentic experience of the village lifestyle. Expect simple accommodations with no beds or showers, but the warm hospitality of the locals more than makes up for it.
Day 2: Transfer to Gardanedsar (2,900m) and Hike to the Shelter (4,350m)
After a hearty breakfast, a 4×4 vehicle will take you to Gardanedsar at 2,900 meters. The drive takes about 40 minutes, after which the real adventure begins. You’ll embark on a challenging hike, gaining 1,450 meters in elevation as you make your way to the shelter at 4,350 meters. The hike, which takes around five hours, will test your endurance, but the breathtaking scenery and the anticipation of reaching the shelter keep spirits high. Depending on availability, you’ll spend the night in the refuge or in tents.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day – Trek to 4,850m and Return to Camp
Acclimatization is key to a successful summit, and today you’ll trek up to 4,850 meters before returning to the campsite at 4,350 meters. This hike, covering an altitude difference of 500 meters, allows your body to adjust to the thinner air at higher elevations. The four-hour round trip offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, giving you a taste of what lies ahead. You’ll spend another night in the refuge or tents, resting up for the big day ahead.
Day 4: Summit Day – Mount Damavand (5,671m)
Summit day is finally here! You’ll start early to tackle the final 1,320 meters of elevation gain to reach the summit of Mount Damavand. The climb is challenging, with a total of 10 hours of trekking, but the sense of accomplishment as you stand on the highest point in Iran is indescribable. The panoramic views from the summit are nothing short of spectacular, stretching across the Alborz Mountain range and beyond. After soaking in the moment, you’ll descend back to the camp at 4,350 meters for a well-deserved rest.
Day 5: Descent to Nandal and Return to Tehran
After breakfast, you’ll begin your descent back to Nandal, retracing your steps through the rugged terrain. The hike down takes about four hours, after which you’ll be transferred back to Tehran. If time permits, you might want to relax in the local sulfur baths, known for their therapeutic properties, before heading back to the city.
Important Notes:
– The refuge at 4,350 meters is unmanned.
– There is no running water, so you’ll need to bring your own or melt snow/ice.
– Registration and an entry fee (USD 50 as of 2023) are required in Nandal.
